Oktoberfest !

Biergarten in the English Garden, Munich, Germany

Oktoberfest has to be the most well known German party of all!

And we can not talk about this event without talking about the magnificent city where it is held, i.e. Munich or as they call it in Germany: München!

Marienplatz, Munich, Germany

There is more to this celebration than drinking beer, but it is probably the best part of it!

The Beer Mass, Munich, Germany Now, why are we drinking beer during Oktoberfest?

Well, it all started with the celebration in honour of the wedding of Ludwig 1rst of Bavaria and Therese von Saxe-Hildburghausen. At the time, a horse race was organized on a field and since then a huge gathering is held each year on this same field, the Theresienwiese, to commemorate the event.

The party starts on a Saturday at the end of September with a parade in the streets of München and the piercing of the first barrel, and continues on for 16 days!

Big tents are erected on this same field and some of them are so big that they can accommodate up to 6000 persons! And of course, the drink of choice is beer, around 5 millions big Mass (beer glass of 1 liter) of it!
